On-form Golspie hit Halkirk for six

By SPP Reporter

GOLSPIE Sutherland kept the leaders in their sights at the top of the North Caledonian League with an emphatic 6-1 victory over Halkirk United at King George V Park last Saturday.

Golspie’s Shane Sutherland opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a long range shot but Darren Malcolm levelled mid-way through the first half when he netted from 12 yards.

Shaun Kerr restored Golspie’s lead in the 27th minute with a sweetly taken volley and Scott MacAngus made it 3-1 at the break when he swept home a Tommy Campbell cut back from the edge of the area.

John MacKay put Golspie out of sight when he added a fourth goal on the hour mark with a looping header.

There was no let up and Sutherland grabbed his second of the match in the 85th minute when he cut in from the flank, beat a defender and fired an unstoppable shot into the net.

The Golspie winger repeated the feat two minutes later when he scored an identical goal to complete his hat-trick.

In the other matches, Sandy Sutherland hit a double as leaders Thurso eased to a 4-0 win over Alness United and Michael Turner hit a hat-trick for Invergordon as the Easter Ross side picked up a welcome three points in a 4-3 over Clachnacuddin at the Recreation Grounds.

MUIR of Ord Rovers are the visitors to King George V Park tomorrow (Saturday) when they play Golspie Sutherland in the SWL Cup semi-final.

Golspie’s John Smith is a major doubt for the tie with a groin injury, while Rovers will be without Scott Morrison and Sandy Sutherland — both have work commitments.

However, Kevin Leitch is available again for the Ross-shire side after returning from holiday.
