It follows the resignation of Councillor Gillian Owen from the leader’s role. She announced at the meeting she is leaving the Conservatives and will become an independent.

Councillor Gwyneth Petrie of the SNP opposition was also proposed for leader but was unsuccessful after a 36-28 vote.

Last month, the Aberdeenshire Conservative group appointed a new leader.

Following the group’s annual general meeting, Banff and Buchan councillor Stewart Adams took over the post.

He replaced former leader, Ellon and District councillor Gillian Owen following a period of unrest in the group.
