Aberdeenshire sheltered housing proposals to be assessed

Proposals around the future operation of 17 sheltered housing complexes are to be considered next week.

A special meeting of Aberdeenshire Council’s communities committee is to take place on Friday, July 4 to consider a range of recommendations, including continuing the operation of some sites, changing the way some locations operate and ending the provision of sheltered housing services in some schemes on a phased basis.

If supported, the proposals will see the introduction of a new “enhanced housing” model that would see sheltered housing services continue for existing tenants, and introduce accommodation for adults over 55 who are largely independent and do not require full sheltered housing services.

The recommendations follow weeks of engagement with sheltered housing tenants, their families, and local communities, alongside a public consultation open to all.

The proposals are part of a wide-ranging review of sheltered housing services to take account of changing demand and financial challenges, coupled with a multi-million programme of investment and modernisation over the next 30 years.

The recommendations are to continue provision of sheltered housing services at:

• Doune Court, Strathdon.

• Gamrie Bay Court, Gardenstown.

• Invercairn Court, Cairnbulg.

A phased transition to a new “enhanced housing” model is proposed for:

• Airlie House, Kintore

• Cantlay Court, Cruden Bay.

• Deveron Court, Turriff.

• Forbes Court, New Pitsligo.

• James Cullen Court, Huntly.

• Kinbroom House, Rothienorman.

• Nether Davah House, Inverurie.

• Slater Court, Ellon.

A recommendation to end, or end part of the provision of sheltered housing services on a phased basis is proposed for:

• Albany Court, Fraserburgh (end services in main block of 41 flats), with continuation of sheltered housing services at the three linked cottages.

• Burnside Court, Portsoy.

• Cumrye, Cuminestown (end services in main block of 13 flats), with continuation of sheltered housing services at the four linked cottages.

• Malcolm Forbes Court, Rosehearty.

• Mearns Court, Laurencekirk (end services in main block of 18 flats), with continuation of sheltered housing services at the 24 linked cottages.

• Renouard Court, St Fergus.

If supported, the committee will also be asked to agree that a report be brought back to the committee in November to review progress of implementing the proposals.
