Moray resident’s kind gesture raises vital funds for Sands after long-time friend’s granddaughter ‘born sleeping’ at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary

An Elgin woman’s kind gesture has raised vital funds and awareness after the devastating loss of her friend’s grandchild late last year.

Elizabeth Duncan has known Lisa Owen for more than two-decades but in December her good friend was left grief-stricken after her granddaughter Gracie was “born sleeping” at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

In the aftermath of the incident Elizabeth decided to support Sands, the charity which has helped Lisa’s family through their grief, by taking on a month-long challenge.

Despite describing herself as “not a runner”, that has seen Elizabeth commit to running a mile every single day in the month of February to raise money for the charity.

Her initial target was £150 but she has already amassed over £1500 with nearly two weeks of the fundraiser still to go.

Elizabeth said: “I knew what Sands did, but I think I was quite naïve as to the full impact of losing a baby and just how supportive Sands are.

“I was blown away by the level of care they provide, but also felt ignorant that I hadn’t realized just how much they do so I decided I would give back.

“The first day of the challenge there were quite a few stops as I’m not a runner but I’m moving for the whole mile now.”

Elizabeth’s total so far is enough to fund the equivalent of 67 memory boxes for grieving families.

The boxes are free to those who have lost their baby and store cherished mementos and other meaningful items.

“I never thought I’d raise even £150,” Elizabeth said.

“To now be at £1500 is phenomenal. It’s surreal but it’s generating important conversations about such an important charity.”

Lisa, like the rest of her family, is still coming to terms with the loss of Gracie.

However, she has been overwhelmed by her friend’s dedication during such a difficult period in her life.

She said: “When my granddaughter was born sleeping, Elizabeth took it upon herself to do this challenge.

“She’s never been a runner, but she was determined.

“Having someone take the time to support such a worthwhile charity that has helped my daughter and her husband immensely is overwhelming.

“It’s so important to recognize that these babies meant a lot to people and by doing this, Elizabeth has already provided support for up to 70 families which is astounding.”

Although Lisa has not personally sought support from Sands, she takes comfort in knowing the organization is there for her daughter and son-in-law whenever they need it.

“They don’t suddenly stop their support,” she added.

“It’s a lifelong commitment if the families want it. That’s something truly special.”
