Storm Babet: Met Office revise Red Warning for Aberdeenshire and Angus
The Met Office which issued a second Red Alert warning for the Angus and South Aberdeenshire area which came into effect at midnight on Friday along with a wider Amber warning for Grampian and parts of the Highlands has now revised the duration of the warnings.
Prolonged and very heavy rain is continuing across parts of Angus and Aberdeenshire area during Saturday, in areas already affected by severe flooding. Accumulations of 70 to 100 mm are expected over a period of 18 hours, the highest accumulations over the hills. Less rainfall is expected around coastal areas, but impacts from the higher rainfall further west will extend towards the coast.
Another period of heavy and prolonged rainfall also continues to affect parts of east and north-east Scotland. The heaviest rainfall is most likely to occur over upland parts of Angus, Aberdeenshire and Grampian, although even lower-lying areas will see some heavy rain. These areas overlap those most affected by the prolonged rain on Thursday and early Friday, thus likely to prolong or renew impacts. Widely 30-50 mm of rain is likely, but some upland areas may see as much as 70-100 mm of rain. Strong easterly winds are likely to accompany heavy rainfall which may exacerbate impacts.
Both warnings now remain in effect until 6pm this evening.
