A road operator has said that repairing a landslip-hit bridge is “extremely complex and challenging” after news that works will take more than a year in total.

It was announced on Wednesday (May 14) that there would be a two-month delay to the scheduled reopening of Keith’s Union Bridge.

Roads operator Amey was originally due to finish the project and reopen the road by May 18 this year - however that date has been shoved back to July 25.

The bridge on the A96 in the town centre was closed on July 21, 2024, after a landslide caused by heavy rainfall.

Traffic management is scheduled for removal from the by July 10, 2025 - but, in total, works are set to last more than 12 months.

A spokesperson for Amey said: “As we have regularly emphasised, the work to restore the integrity of Union Bridge is extremely complex and challenging.

“There was some slippage on our original programme due to delays in accessing the site following SGN carrying out emergency repairs to a gas main, and also additional checks being required to the contractor’s temporary works design which emerged following the commencement of repair works.

“We appreciate the frustration that such repair works can cause and want to thank road users and the local community for their patience.”
