HIGHLAND police have issued an appeal to householders to take simple steps to prevent “sneak thefts” from their homes.

Northern Constabulary’s warning aims to reduce the chance of opportunistic thefts.

They are particularly keen to ensure householders don’t “invite” crime by failing to ake straightforward precautions.

Police say householders should lock ALL doors, front and rear, especially at night or when in the garden.

Thy stress that windows should also be secured when no one is at home and at night - especially ground floor ones.

The Northern Constabulary warning also extends to sheds, garages and outbuildings with an appeal to make sure bikes and other valuables are not left out, unsecured, overnight.

They say that while this is generally a safe place to live, it is not immune to this sort of offence. A spokesman said: “We urge everyone to follow these simple steps to help reduce this upsetting and unnecessary type of crime.

“In addition, Northern Constabulary urges communities to remain vigilant and report any unusual persons or activities to us.”

That can be done by calling Northern Constabulary on 01463 715555 or Crimestoppers, confidentially, on 0800 555 111.
