Police have issued a warning of poor visibility as strong south-westerly gusts of wind have caused sand to blow out of fields and drift into roads.

Drivers have reported hazardous conditions between Forres and Elgin, with local roads also badly affected.

Among the worst affected are residents living next to recently rolled and seeded farmer’s fields in rural areas of Forres, where sand is reported to be entering homes, and causing problems for householders.

A digger was sent down to the Broom of Moy to clear the access road to the village, which was previously practically cut off due to piles of sand, with reports of at least one vehicle having to be dug out.

The ‘Gazette’ has also received reports of hazardous driving conditions on the A96 between Forres and Alves with some drivers unable to see in front of their vehicles.

High winds are set to continue for most of today.
