THE best new buildings in Moray are being sought under an architectural competition, launched today.

Held every two years, the Inverness Architectural Association (IAA) Highlands and Islands Design Awards aim to raise awareness of the importance of good design.

Established in 2008, they have since attracted more than 200 entries across the region, despite the recession and its impact on the construction industry.

Past winners include Moray-based LDN Architects for Gordonstoun Studio Theatre, as well as Linksview Cottage, Findhorn by Edge Architecture and Design.

The awards feature a range of categories and include prizes for best new building, best restoration and best use of timber. Members of the public can nominate their favourite new building for the Open Award which must have been completed within the period January 2010 to January 2012.

IAA president Andy Bruce said: "The regional and open Awards generate lots of interest right across the area and they’re an opportunity for architects, our clients, construction industry colleagues and the public to get involved in considering what an important role good architecture and design plays in all our lives."

Moray is one of six regions covered under the initiative, with local winners going forward to the main Highlands and Islands awards held in November.

More details are available at www.highlandarchitects.org/2012-awards and the closing date is Friday, April 20. Members of the public should email awards@highlandarchitects.org to nominate their favourite new building.
