A WARNING about offensive singing, in particular references to the gypsy or travelling community, has been issued by police ahead of tomorrow’s derby clash between Ross County and Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Northern Constabulary has made clear any words which might suggest hatred or cause offence will not be tolerated and could lead to prosecution.

It stated that any use of "gypsy" alongside any other word which might, to any reasonable person, portray hatred, would leave fans open to arrest under the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012.

The warning follows talks between both clubs and the police in the lead-up to the much-anticipated clash in Dingwall.

David Balfour of the fans’ group Caley Jags Together, stressed there was no history of animosity or disorder at the fixture and called for any chanting to be seen in that light.

But he added: "Collectively we are mindful of the fact that matches are being broadcast by TV, radio and online to a wider audience and what is seen as banter by some local rival fans might be viewed very differently by others both attending the match or watching or listening from elsewhere."

Mr Balfour said both sides were clear no-one wished to see prosecutions resulting from chanting by either set of fans at this showpiece fixture.

"Caley Jags Together asks that all fans take these views on board and give consideration to what they chant or sing at future matches between Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Ross County," he went on.

Ross County general manager Ranald Gilbert said banter between the two clubs might not be appreciated by those on the outside.
