Further updates on the weather situation have been issued by Aberdeenshire Council and the Met Office.

In an online statement Aberdeenshire Council said: "While Aberdeenshire is still getting battered by rain and strong winds – and even stronger gusts – we’re beginning to see an improving picture in the forecast overnight and into tomorrow.

"But remember we are still under a yellow Met Office weather warning so there remains the risk of impacts to communities and infrastructure.

The Met Office has updated its yellow weather warning for heavy rain.

"A number of north-east roads have significant standing water this morning and some have been closed as a result of localised flooding – please do not drive through heavily flooded sections of the network.

"There will also be the chance of wind-blown debris and the potential for fallen trees on our roads and across the wider region so again please take care if you’re venturing out.

"Low-lying coastal communities from Rosehearty in the north all the way round to Inverbervie also remain under a Sepa flood warning – particularly around high tides in the next couple of hours and overnight so we may see overtopping of harbour walls and defences. Please again stay away from coastal areas, clifftops and riversides today.

"We continue to monitor river levels closely and at this moment in time we have confidence that these will remain within operational limits – but again if you do live in a known flood-risk area get prepared in the event of any flooding occurring.

"And finally, our thanks go to both our council teams and local resilience groups the length and breadth of Aberdeenshire who have remained on standby during this latest bout of stormy weather in the event that they need to take action – rest assured your continued support is very much appreciated by us all."

Meanwhile, a yellow weather warning for heavy rain in the Grampian area has been updated by the Met Office.

The warning area has been updated to include the north-east Highlands, western parts of the Central Belt and parts of north-east England.

The rain is now expected to ease earlier than previously indicated, the end time of the warning has been brought forward to 3am on Monday.
