Commenting, Mr Thomson said: “The recent instances of flooding on the A96 and within Huntly were disruptive and a cause of real concern for local residents and motorists alike.

"While we’ve been experiencing spells of extreme weather of late which has no doubt contributed to the situation, I’m aware that this is not just happening during extreme weather.

“It’s clear that action needs to be taken by the various authorities to address this and I am pleased that Transport Scotland have responded quickly and positively, confirming that the Trunk Road Operating Company Amey are working on measures to mitigate this.”

Responding to Mr Thomson’s letter, Hugh Gillies, Director of Roads at Transport Scotland said: “I am pleased to confirm that our operating company Amey has designed a scheme which will help to alleviate flooding and improve resilience at this location.

“The works, which will include the installation of new and additional filter drainage, are currently at the tendering stage and are hoped to be completed by 31 March.

"In the interim Amey will continue to respond to weather related incidents and ensure that they do everything possible to maintain the network and keep disruption to a minimum.”

Huntly, Strathbogie and Howe of Alford councillor Gwyneth Petrie added: “It is very reassuring to know that Amey have now identified a solution which should prevent these closures due to flooding, which have been happening far too frequently.

“I look forward to seeing the work implemented and the resultant improvements for all road users, as well as the removal of the significant disruption that the closures have been causing to the residents of Huntly.”
