Provost Judy Whyte said she was "delighted" to present the centre with a Scottish tourist board visitor attraction four star award.

It represents present achievements and the continuing progress towards the creation of museum status which reflects the socio-economic and industrial heritage of the Garioch.

This month also sees the return by popular demand of the Fashion through the ages exhibition with new additions bringing fashion trends up to the 1980s and an intriguing selection of past undergarments.

Under the aegis of society member Joan Bruce and her team there will be a fashion show on Saturday, November 11.

The theme of industrial heritage was vividly continued with an illustrated presentation by engineering conservationist James Mitchell.

He explained his fascination with engines and locomotives started at an early age making models with Meccano.

His first job was as a millwright and he later took degrees in industrial history and engineering and soon restoring steam engines became a lasting passion.

His by-word became "Don't do anything that can't be undone, such as drilling holes!

One of his most recent and most satisfying projects has been the restoration of the Aberdeenshine canal boat, rescued from dereliction in the port, now the proud resident upstairs in the Garioch Heritage centre and at last definitively described as an ice-breaker.

His one regret? "That people don't look after their heritage as they should -apart from the Garioch Heritage society who are doing a grand job!"

The next society meeting is on Wednesday November 1 when the guest speaker will be Gaynor Berkin on Remembrance.
