Big 'Hendo' was crown world seniors champion on Sunday night after a stunning performance at the iconic Circus Tavern venue in Purfleet.

Competing in the tournament for darts legends aged 50 and over for the first time, Henderson overpowered his opponents and whitewashed Northern Irishman Colin McGarry by five sets to nil in the final.

'The Highlander' recently lost his Professional Darts Corporation tour card after a dip in form.

While on the tour, he reached the pinnacle of his career by pairing up with two-time world champion Peter Wright to win Scotland the World Cup of Darts three years ago.

Speaking after his world seniors' win, which was screened live on BBC, he said his latest glory was right up there with the success he enjoyed with Wright.

"Winning the World Cup with Peter for the PDC was absolutely fantastic but this is right up there," he said.

"I was former World Cup champion but now I'm going to be the current world seniors (champion).

"It's an absolute honour to play (here) and win this. It's massive for me."

In the first round on Thursday, Hendo didn't hit top form in his 3-1 win over ten-time women's world professional darts champion Trina Gulliver.

The biggest star in the tournament was the sport's finest-ever player, 16-time men's world champion Phil 'The Power' Taylor who was defeated in the first round.

Kevin Painter, the man Taylor beat in the world final in 2004, was Henderson's next opponent and a 3-1 success took the Huntly man into the quarter-finals.

There he played another former PDC world championship finalist in Andy Hamilton, who he defeated 3-1.

Henderson produced an average of 92.91 for three darts in his semi-final whitewash victory over Canadian Jim Long in the semi-finals.

And he was too good for McGarry, dropping just six legs in the best-of-nine-sets final and clinching the title with a 112 finish.
