NAIRN County’s revival gathered pace at the weekend after overcoming a potentially costly mishap to beat mid-table Turriff United 2-1.

The Wee County have now won three home matches in a row since Steven Mackay replaced Ronnie Sharp at the managerial helm, lifting them to 13th place, just three points short of the top half positions in the league.

Saturday’s 2-1 win came with goals from Ciaran Young and Fraser Dingwall, either side of an own goal from newly-signed Caley Thistle loanee Lewis Munro, the 17-year-old goalkeeper.

Munro’s slip in dropping a cross into the net came amid an otherwise solid show.

Mackay, who made a substitute’s bow but later left the field with a calf injury, said: “I’m really pleased with the manner of the win.

“We were in control for the majority of the first half, but took a bit of a setback at the start of the second with young Lewis just misjudging a cross.

"What was pleasing was the way we reacted.”

Home pressure paid off after 27 minutes, with Ciaran Young getting away from Turriff defender Liam Cheyne inside the penalty area, before firing past Turriff’s David Dey.

In the second half, Munro brilliantly turned away an Aaron Reid shot before his mistake from Callan’s Gray’s corner saw the ball cross the goal-line.

But Nairn grabbed the winner in the 78th minute when Adam Porritt’s free kick found team captain Dingwall leaping into a challenge then netting from a loose ball.

After a 5-0 home win over Clach, Brechin City remain level with Buckie Thistle at the summit, but with a game in hand.

Buckie won 2-1 at Formartine, while Brora stayed third, three points behind the leaders, after beating Huntly 3-1 at Christie Park.
