Turriff United defeated by league leaders Brechin City

Turriff United were beaten 3-0 by Highland League champions Brechin City.

A brace from Grady McGrath and a goal from Fraser MacLeod were enough for City to secure the three points at The Haughs on Saturday afternoon.

The result saw the visitors return to the summit of the league table.

Brechin had an early chance when Ewan Murray played in Ewan Loudon whose shot was blocked by the Turriff defence.

The away side then scored early when a high ball came to MacLeod and he lobbed it over United goalkeeper David Dey for the opener.

At the other end the hosts had a penalty shout after John Allan was held back in the box but nothing was given by referee Joel Kennedy.

The home side then had a good chance when Jack McKenzie made a decent run towards goal, however, he hit his shot high over the crossbar.

City then extended their lead when McGrath latched onto a loose ball and fired it into the net.

After half-time Brechin added a third goal when MacLeod's cross was delivered to McGrath and he made no mistake with his effort, giving Turriff a mountain to climb.

The second half was then quieter with City keeping their lead and the host's attacks under control.

John Allan won the ball for United and played in Ewan Clark who sprinted towards goal and hit his shot just over the crossbar.

Turriff had a late penalty claim when substitute Reece McKeown was taken down in the box but the referee was not interested.

The home side then had the ball in the back of the net after a Liam Strachan cross was headed in by substitute Fergus Alberts but the linesman flagged for offside and they were denied a consolation goal.
