TURRIFF United were unable to do Deveronvale any favours when they suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Buckie Thistle on Saturday in the Highland League.

Buckie started the game on the front foot and with less than 30 seconds on the clock a Jamie Shewan cross tested Stephen Coutts in the Turriff goal.

Gary Clark then had a go, but Coutts did well to tip his shot over the bar.

Turriff were stringing together some decent passing moves and could have tested Kevin Main on the quarter hour, but Donald Fraser seemed undecided about whether to cross or shoot and in the end he simply scuffed the ball in the direction of the Jags’ keeper.

The breakthrough arrived in the 21st minute when Cammy Bowden failed to clear a ball in from the right and Ian Murray picked it up and found Donnie Munro, who angled an unstoppable shot into the top left-hand corner of the net.

Turriff were a greater threat in the second half with the wind at their backs, and Gary Harris flashed an effort across the face of goal just to remind Buckie that one goal could change the complexion of the table.

Coutts touched a Hamish Munro free kick past the post, then he palmed away a Paul Napier set piece for another corner.

From the corner, Napier found Michael Morrison who made no mistake with his header to seal the victory for Buckie.

In the closing stages, Grant Noble’s 30-yard free-kick went close when it smashed off the crossbar.

Turriff manager Kris Hunter said: "I don’t think we threatened much apart from in the first 20 minutes when we had the chances but we didn’t take them.

"They have a lot of good attacking players in their team, but I thought our youngsters were superb.

"When we were on top in the second half, it might have changed the game if we had scored, but we gave away a cheap second goal from a corner kick."

This week, Turriff face Aberdeen in the Aberdeenshire Shield tomorrow (Wednesday) night at Peterhead’s Balmoor Stadium, before they finish their league campaign with a trip to Fort William on Saturday.
