A TEAM of 10 Thurso ASC swimmers from a total of 14 qualifiers travelled to Aberdeen Sports Village for the second round of the North District Age Group Championships at the weekend.

For four of the younger swimmers (10-12 years) the meet on Saturday and Sunday was their first experience at this level and of competing in a long course (50m pool) event. They all performed very well, gaining in confidence over the weekend.

Highlights for Thurso included Andrew Campbell’s swim in the 16/17 years 200m butterfly where he secured the bronze medal and a large long course personal best in a well-executed race and Tom Armitage’s 50m and 100m backstroke swims which qualified him for the finals and gave him Scottish national age group qualifying times in both events.

Cheered on by the rest of the team, Tom powered home in the 100m event to take bronze in a PB of 1:13.97 – an impressive three seconds faster than the time he recorded in his earlier heat and a huge eight seconds faster than his meet qualifying time.
