This month's Scottish Rugby Caledonia North Schools 6 Series event was open to S1 and S2 pupils across the Moray and Nairn area.

It was the first time that secondary schools have taken part in a touch rugby tournament, and the first round of the series attracted strong interest.

Teams from Elgin High, Elgin Academy, Nairn Academy, Milne's High and Keith Grammar took part, as well as a number of pupils from Lossiemouth High and Buckie High.

Former Glasgow High Kelvinside captain Cameron Hughes, who started his rugby career with the Elgin outfit, was appointed as Moray's first-ever full-time development officer at the end of 2020 in a role in partnership with Gordonstoun School.

Speaking about the touch rugby event, Hughes said: "It was brilliant to see so many pupils coming together and playing rugby.

"A particular highlight of mine was seeing those who experienced club players support and encourage those brand new to the game. Hopefully we will see more take up the game"

As well as a competitive boys tournament, there was a 10 a-side touch rugby match for the girls who attended.

A Moray RFC spokesperson said: "Well done to everyone who took part and thanks especially to the teachers and coaches for giving up their time to make this happen.

"Particular mention goes to Milne's High School who were undefeated and played some superb rugby throughout the afternoon."
