Scottish BB Cross Country Championships puts hosts Buckie on fast track to success

THERE was a welcome return to Buckie for the Scottish Cross Country Boys’ Brigade Championships recently.

Buckie Community High School playing fields hosted the event, which got under starter's orders for the first time in three years due to the Covid pandemic.

On hand to present the prizes at the end of the day was past Queen's Badge boy Kyle Cowie, who was a member of 1st Buckie Company Boys' Brigade for 12 years and was National Scottish Boys’ Brigade Champion at senior level, for two consecutive years. He is now a police officer serving locally.

The hosts enjoyed a number of successes. Caleb Watt, Luca Watt, Cullen Ferguson and Alfie Robertson scored a first for Buckie by winning the Scottish Junior Team Trophy.

Roy Taylor was runner up in the Individual Senior Competition while Luca Sutherland finished third in the Senior Individual category.

In another first for the hosts, Finlay Wood, Roy Taylor and Luca Sutherland won the Senior Team Trophy again.

Meanwhile, Nathan Clark, Jay Farley and Mason Simpson were runners-up in the Intermediate Team Competition.

The results were: Junior Individual – 1. Finlay Liddell (Dundee & Angus); 2. Ben Upfold (Falkirk & District); 3. Fraser Rennie (Stirling & District). Junior Team – 1. Banffshire; 2. Stirling & District; 3. Buchan. Intermediate Individual – 1. Matthew Ford (Stirling & District); 2. Edwin Naughton (Aberdeen & District); 3. Aiden Gault (Dundee & Angus); Intermediate Team – 1. Dundee & Angus; 2. Stirling & District; 3. Banffshire. Senior Individual – 1. Jonathan Downie (East Ayrshire); 2. Roy Taylor (Banffshire); 3. Luca Sutherland (Banffshire). Senior Team – 1. Banffshire; 2. Glasgow.

The organisers voiced their thanks to all who participated, helped out or sponsored the event.
