Scotland legend Craig Chalmers will be star guest at a Banff Rugby Club dinner celebrating their 45th anniversary in aid of the MyName5Doddie Foundation.
The charity was set up to raise awareness and boost research into motor neuron disease, which affected rugby hero Doddie Weir who spearheaded fundraising efforts before he died last November.
His former international team-mate Chalmers, who successfully campaigned to have a stand at Scotland’s Murrayfield home named in Weir’s honour, will speak at the dinner on September 16 at the Fife Lodge in Banff.
A club spokesperson said: “We have managed to secure former Scotland, British Lion and Barbarian, Craig Chalmers, who secured 60 international caps for Scotland in his career and scored 166 points at fly half.
“He represented the British Lions in 1989 on their tour of Australia where he played in the first test.
“We are so proud that Craig has chosen to come and be our guest speaker at an event that is raising money for a charity that Craig holds dear to his heart. In January of this year Craig cycled 550 plus miles with several other rugby legends in aid of Myname5doddie Foundation.
“He also has his own justgiving page set up in aid of the Doddie foundation - at present he has raised £11,000.”
Next month’s event will be compered by journalist Dave Edwards and will chart the 45-year history of Banff RFC, a celebration of some of its current and former members including founder George Webster.
Local band Wonderland will provide music on the day with an auction including a special bust of Doddie Weir made by Penicuik artist Jan Miller. A signed Scotland and Ireland shirt, a Doddie cycling shirt and many other items will be up-for-grabs.
