WITH the weather and sea conditions improving, Banff Sailing Club is back in action and looking to build on a successful 2010 season.

Last year, the popular club bought two keelboats with the aim of helping members improve their sailing skills.

The purchase proved to be the foundation of the year’s success and secretary Moira Moore hopes 2011 will be even better.

She said: "We are looking to build on the success of last season which attracted much interest locally and from throughout the North-east with many clubs coming along to compete in match racing.

"The key to the racing was securing funding for the two keelboats and the club is going from strength to strength with people coming for taster sessions, joining the club and taking part in courses to improve their skills.

"We have just run a keelboat level one and two course for members that joined last year and they are now able to skipper the club boats. Furthermore, in that week, potential instructors were assessed for a course later in the year.

"We also played host to instructors from all over Scotland who came along to learn more about the keelboats and for some coaching time on the water. It was a brilliant weekend and it is hoped the instructors come back with their clubs to match race on a regular basis."

The club has a full programme of events planned for the year from club racing, gentle cruising up the coast and its regatta in September.

The club will hold a weekend of taster sessions at Whitehills Marina on May 14 and 15. For more information, e-mail: neil707sailing@hotmail.co.uk
