The Highlands and Islands League and cup champions have been running the sessions since last October and have proved popular so far, attracting an average of 10 players per session.

Part of the inspiration for the sessions has come from an SFA initiative, being run in partnership with Snickers, called Just Play #FootballforAll which is aimed at those who cannot or do not want to commit to weekly football over a club season and just want to turn up to play.

This, alongside recognising life priorities women face such as work shifts and children/family, helped drive forward the creation of recreational football.

Lorna Young, who plays for Buckie Ladies, said: "It has been hard for some women to commit to a team travelling across the country for games every week.

"We wanted to encourage those that had given up on football to come back and play locally for fun when they can but also support others wanting to start their football journey with friends or to make new friends. These sessions are all small sided games (no drills) so people can get lots of touches of the ball on a small pitch."

It is believed that at present the recreation football initiative for women is the only one of its kind in Moray.

Open to women aged 18 and over, the programme has attracted a wide range of ages, from early 20s to late 40s.

The sessions, which cost just £2, are held at Gordon Park, Portgordon on Fridays between 7pm and 8pm.
