Kemnay Golf Club is playing host today to a field of 69 hopefuls looking to qualify for the Men’s Open Championship at Meldrum House on Friday, June 2.

Introduced in 2022 at Fraserburgh Golf Club due to increasing entries into the Championship, the pre-qualifier provides increased means to make the final field and gives the players greater power over their own success.

Before our pre-qualifier was introduced, entries were balloted to provide a final field, with a reserve list used to fill spaces if there were any withdrawals.

This is the second year the pre-qualifying round will run, following the success of last year’s event and positive feedback from players on the expanded opportunity.

As per last year, a minimum of 30 qualifying places will be available for the Scottish Men’s Open at Meldrum House by means of an 18-hole stroke play round.

Additional spots will be available from the pre-qualifier, should there be any withdrawals from the main field.

Every player who enters the event but doesn’t make the initial ballot will have the opportunity to compete for one of those spots.

Cormac Sharpe (Blairgowrie) will be hoping to repeat his previous win.

Known faces are among the hopefuls, including Cormac Sharpe (Blairgowrie), who topped the leader board in the 2022 Pre Qualifier and Callum Bruce (Deeside), who won the Jaffrey Cup last year aged 15 to become the youngest winner on record.

Weather conditions look set to be dry and sunny in the afternoon, promising a great day at one of the finest inland courses in the north-east.

However, the Kemnay championship course will provide a challenge for the players, especially holes such as the fine Craigearn (Hole 9) and the deceptively difficult Leschangie (Hole 11).
