Carissa Anderson (18) plays every week at Pinz Junior Bowling Club in Elgin and her performances in national competitions saw her qualify for the four-strong Scotland under-19 team.

She will be aiming for strikes at the international event in Barnsley beginning tomorrow, with the tournament held from August 25 to 29.

Pinz coach Billie Anderson hopes Carissa's achievements will inspire other young people in Moray to give the sport a try at their club.

"Carissa won her last ranking tournament at the beginning of February, and she’s a good kid. She’s brilliant," said her coach.

"She has worked hard all year to get her place. She has to qualify through the Scottish junior rankings, they do six tournaments a year and the worst score gets dropped and top five highest scores go through and the top four make each team.

"I’m proud of what she has achieved and I would love to see others coming through the club with the opportunity to achieve what she has."

The Pinz juniors meet every Wednesday at 6pm at the bowling alley in Moycroft industrial estate.

A club was hosted at the Elgin alley for 19 years before they were forced to relocate to Rollerbowl in Inverness for a period of time.

This switch saw the club lose many of their Moray members, but now they are back at Pinz they want more youngsters to know about what they offer.

"We were called Highlanders and we played at the Rollerbowl in Inverness but we are now Pinz Youth Bowling Club," Billie said.

"I lost a lot of my juniors because they didn’t want to travel to Inverness. Now that we’re back at Pinz I’ve actually still got Inverness bowlers that have come with me.

"We have some good kids but we could do with a few more. Sessions are at 6pm and sometimes they get a couple of hours because they get their coaching, then three games.

"I provide the coaching for free. They do have to pay for their bowling but they get a concession rate.

"They can win badges and trophies. They can bowl to national and even international level. I coach up to international level.

"I always think it’s sad that a place the size of Elgin has so few participating in this sport.

"So we definitely want to encourage more to come along and enjoy it. There's a really friendly atmosphere."
