Mixed results for Garioch bowling teams

The Garioch/Turriff Ladies bowlers have reached the semi-final of Scottish Knockout Cup, writes Mike Barron.

They now meet either Coatbridge, Balbardie or Arbroath. Coatbridge are currently top of West Premier League, Balbardie are mid table in East Premier, while Arbroath are in the same North Premier league.

The record is Garioch 62-43 away, and a defeat at home by 50-55.

The game against East Kilbride was a triumph for the home ladies

East Kilbride started favourites, but “G & T” won 8-2 with only one rink of four losing. It was an outstanding performance.

Lyn Ronald and Carol Stuart’s rinks settled well and kept scoring shots regularly.

They kept this up and both won their matches 19-7 and 15-11 respectively, and four valuable points.

Liz Fraser was ahead at the fifth end, but by eighth fell five shots behind. From the 13th end she caught up. She won the 14th and 15th finishing three shots up at 19-16.

Glenys Bolt was always behind, and lost 7-25. At her final end she scored a shot to see the overall score 60-59.

Garioch won 8-2. This magnificent win was done without Carla Banks who was on international duty.

Meanwhile, Fraserburgh v Garioch in the gents at the Broch on Saturday, March 4 will be for the title.

With both teams winning at the weekend, and Buchan losing to Arbroath, the Mintlaw side is not in contention.

Both teams have played nine, won seven, lost two and 14 points. There is a difference in + shots, +161 for Garioch and Fraserburgh +213.

The match win against Stonehaven was never in doubt with the score Garioch 88 Stonehaven 58.

All four Gents rinks won on Saturday and from end two Stonehaven were struggling.

It was free scoring in the early ends, with Jason Banks taking five shots at the first, and they continued to score well.

He lost some heavy scores being well ahead in the match. He won by 12 shots.

Brian Reid and Lee Collins were never behind and always in charge.

Alan Rough had a close game but still won by three shots.

Meanwhile, the Garioch Seniors failed to make the second round of the Scottish Knockout Cup having lost to Turriff 2-8. Only one of four rinks won.

Bob Airth, with Frank Sinclair, Bob Waiter and Gordon Sievewright, had a steady game and kept it close. He drew well in the final ends to win 19-11.

Charlie Reid, Arthur Murrison, Gary McDonald with Bill Barclay had a narrow defeat.

There was never much in an even contest but Barclay finally lost by three shots 15-18.

Norman Burnett’s rink had a tough match and were never in the game losing heavily.

Ron Booth, the fourth skip, had a very poor start and never got into the match.
