Turriff RFC mens and ladies squads were both in action this past weekend, with the men away against Kinloss Eagles on the Saturday and the ladies taking part in the newly formed Women’s Aspiring League on Sunday, writes Isla Jack.

Turriff RFC men were met with a huge challenge on Saturday against an experienced and physical Kinloss team.

Despite being very well matched in the pack through a well functioning scrum, excellent support in the pods and at the breakdown, the speed of the Kinloss back line created a great challenge out wide and resulted in a full-time score of 71-5 to the home team.

Special mentions go to forwards man-of-the-match Andrew Clark who has cemented himself within the team as a hard-working player, backs man-of-the-match Aaron Inglis who consistently impresses with his speed and agility in attack, and to Kinloss’ Turriff man-of-the-match Morgan Page, who is becoming well-known for his strong running and penchant for a hand-off.

Turriff’s try scorer of the day was Matt Baron who works tirelessly in both attack and defence throughout every game and managed to get Turriff on the scoreboard.

Next up for the men is Highland RFC thirds at home with a 3pm kick-off.

Meanwhile, the ladies took part in their first ever Aspiring League fixture at Garioch RFC.

Set up with five rounds of games to give each team 80 minutes of game time, other teams present included the Mackie Vixens – who joined Turriff for the day – Garioch, Ross Sutherland, Highland, Moray/Huntly and Stornoway.

Turriff's and Mackie's womens teams joined forces for the new league games.

Captained by Isla Jack and vice-captain Natalie McDonald, the ladies put on a cracking display of rugby and won four out of four games.

Bolstered by the experience of players such as Bobbie Jack, Louise Sneddon and Lyndsey Hester were new players who all put in great effort in attack and defence throughout the whole day, showcasing all the hard work each and every one of them has been putting in at training.

Special mentions go to Ashley Milne and Lila Fowlie for scoring their first tries for Turriff RFC Ladies, and to Fowlie for being Turriff’s Player of the Tournament.

The ladies are looking forward to the next round hosted by Moray RFC on Sunday, October 23.
