A DOUBLE from Russell McLaughlin helped Rovers book their place in the second round of the Quest Engineering Inter-Generational Cup on Saturday.
The away clash at New Elgin proved to be anything but a classic game of football although that was of little concern to the Buckie side as McLaughlin's brace – including a penalty to seal the tie – plus a strike from Davy McDonagh secured a 3-2 win.
For Rovers' co-boss Kyle Mackay, it was a case of job done.
"It wasn't a classic game by any means and we had a bit of a bare bones squad," he said.
"We huffed and puffed for 90 minutes but we got the win and we're in the next round of the cup, which is all that matters.
"Pinefield is never an easy place to go so you're always pleased to come away with a result.
"It wasn't one of those games where players stood out although it was great to see Russell getting a couple."
There is something of a step into the unknown this coming Saturday for the Merson Park men when they host Stoneyburn, who hail from near Bathgate in West Lothian, in the second round of the Scottish Junior Cup. Stoneybridge currently ply their trade in the East Region South Division where, at the time of writing, they sit second.
Mackay added: "We don't know much about them so we'll being doing our homework over the course of this week.
"Hopefully we should have pretty much a full squad to choose from for the game."
The game kicks off at 2.30pm.
