LONG-SERVING Buckie Thistle defender Shaun Wood has called time on his career after a long-term injury.

Wood has played for the Jags since joining from Buckie Rovers in 2012, but has retired after doctors found arthritis in his ankle after a break in 2022.

The defender’s last game for Buckie will be his testimonial match against Elgin City.

Speaking to the club’s Facebook page, he said: “Arthritis is something that will never go away and it is only going to get worse playing football.

“I had hoped to play another couple of years but I've got to do what's best for my health and wellbeing.

"I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone involved at Buckie Thistle for an amazing 12 years.

“To all the past and present managers, coaches, physios and players for making it such a memorable part of my life. Also to the loyal Buckie Thistle supporters. Thank you for all your support over the years.”

Midfielder Max Barry has also left Buckie Thistle after being transfer listed at his own request. Barry scored 16 goals last season, including the all-important title-clincher against Keith on the season’s final day.

Barry - from Aberdeen - has moved to League Two club Peterhead.

Elsewhere in the Highland League, midfielder Jamie Michie - most recently at Forres Mechanics - has joined Huntly.

Keith have snapped up striker Scott Barron from neighbours Islavale, while Craig Gill has extended his contract until 2027.
