FRIENDLY competition with his brother Andy is helping Keith midfielder Craig MacAskill improve his goal scoring this season.

Craig has fired in six goals in all competitions, with older brother Andy, who plays in midfield for Buckie Thistle, a few ahead with nine strikes.

The Keith man said: “We have a wee bit of a family competition this season with goals.

“It’s friendly competition and nothing too serious. I’ve probably never scored more than Andy in a season, so it would be good to do that.

“He is on nine and I’m on six, so it’s getting quite tight now.

“Six is the most I’ve had in a season so to do that with half the season to go is decent enough. At the start of the season I was aiming for 10, so to only be four away is good. Hopefully I manage to get there."

The brothers are set to clash once more this campaign, and Craig will be looking for revenge after brother Andy and Buckie smashed Keith 8-2 at Kynoch Park at the start of the season.

He added: “We were meant to play Buckie a few weeks ago but it got called off. The match hasn’t been re-scheduled yet.

“We had them at the start of the season and they beat us, but we beat them and drew with them last season, so it is kind of even just now.”

MacAskill started his footballing journey at Kynock Park as an eager teenager and, now 25, is back having played the game at a range of clubs.

“I started here when I was 16,” he said.

“I was here for a couple of years, went to Turriff and came back. Then I went to Australia and came back again.

“I feel at home here. It’s a good squad and we all get along. There’s a good spirit and you can probably tell that with the way we play.

“The majority of the squad are based in Aberdeen and we all get the bus up together, so we are quite tight-knit. We always go out together and are quite good pals.”

Keith stunned Formartine United last night, with goals from James Brownie and Gregor MacDonald securing a 2-1 victory for the Maroons.

This weekend is free for Dean Donaldson's side, who are back in action when they face Rothes in the Highland League Cup on Wednesday.
