Football can be a cruel game as Keith's latest bid to end a winless streak showed on Saturday.

The Maroons lost 2-1 at Clach, with manager Craig Ewen left scratching his head after claiming his team dominated the contest and created the bulk of scoring chances.

Even a goal by recent signing Gavin Elphinstone, Keith's first strike in over eight hours of football, couldn't gain the result that the Kynoch Park men deserved on the day.

"I think Clach had something like five efforts on goal, when we had ten chances in the second half alone as well as maybe five or six in the first half," Ewen said.

"I can't get my head around how we have come away from that game with nothing to show for it.

"We dominated the second half, we had chance after chance and it just wouldn't go for us.

"Their keeper made some saves, we had shots off the line and one off the bar. We just aren't getting the breaks at the moment."

Ewen reacted to Clach manager Jordan Macdonald's view that his team deserved to win the match by saying: "I think he must have been at a different game.

"I try to be as honest as possible about games. When we played Clach at Keith, we stole a 2-1 win as they were all over us and I think that happended in reverse on Saturday.

"I always try to be as honest and transparent in my assessment of the game as I can be."

Elphinstone's maiden Keith goal since his move from Huntly ended a barren run dating back to February 4 when Liam Duncan's first minute strike against Deveronvale found the net.

It's no big secret that the Maroons' lack of a clinical edge is a major factor in them sitting second bottom of the league.

They have managed to score just 27 goals in 30 outings in all competitions this season.

However, Ewen was encouraged by the amount of chances created by his team in Inverness and was pleased to see Elphinstone get on the scoresheet.

"Gav was a threat all day long on Saturday. He gets himself in the box and was a real menace to them with his work rate.

"He's quick, he's strong and capable with either foot and I think he will be a very good player for Keith.

"But I coyuldn't fault any of the players on Saturday. We've just got to keep at it.

"There were far more positives to take from the performance than there were negatives.

"One of these days we will get the breaks and get one of these games over the line."

Building on those positives, Keith might have fancied their chances of breaking their nine-game winless streak at home to Wick Academy on Wednesday or at bottom club Strathspey Thistle on Saturday.

So maybe is sums up the Maroons' luck right now that there is a bad weather forecast for this week, already putting some doubt on the midweek Kynoch Park clash and possibly this weekend's trip down to Grantown, where the snow is likely to linger.
