GARIOCH bowler Jason Banks says he had to pinch himself after becoming world champion – and hopes his triumph can inspire an upsurge in popularity in the sport across the area.

The engineering graduate joined the greats of Scottish bowling by securing the country’s 10th world crown with his under-25 IIBC Men's Singles title at West Denton BC in Newcastle, beating Englishman Connor Cinato 8-3, 10-6 in the final.

Banks said: “I don’t think it has sunk in yet that I’m a world champion.

“I was pleased that I managed to find form when needed, and carried it from the earlier rounds right through to the final.

“I’d like to thank all my family for their great support and encouragement from when I started bowling at the age of 10 until today, where they continue to support me.

“They’ve allowed me to play and most importantly enjoy bowls, but have taught me so much along the way.

“I just hope that this achievement will encourage more people to go and try bowls for themselves. Why not go down to your local indoor or outdoor club and give it a shot.

“It really is a fantastic hobby that everyone can enjoy with relatively little expense as a beginner.”

Banks has also been selected to play lead for Scotland at the Men’s BIIBC International Series at Llanelli in March.

It is double joy for the family as his sister Carla has won a recall to the Scotland team for the women’s event.
