DEVERONVALE manager Grant Noble said Saturday’s clash with Buckie Thistle was “maybe just a game too many” for his young squad.

Noble got his first taste of defeat since taking on the Vale job when his side were defeated 6-1 by the Jags at Victoria Park.

After taking an early lead in the Fisherman’s Derby through Cameron Angus, Vale found themselves trailing 2-1 at half-time thanks to Lyall Keir’s equaliser and then a Jack Murray penalty kick five minutes into first half stoppage time.

The Jags scored four unreturned goals in the second period to secure a big win.

Noble said: “First half, against the wind, we played quite well and were in the game. We got the lead, but lost the second goal at a tough time.

“We weren’t out of it at half-time and thought we could cause problems if we could get the ball forward with the wind.

“But we didn’t do enough to get it forward. There was poor decision-making at times and we didn’t trouble them enough.

“It’s disappointing to lose six, but at 3-1 with 10 minutes to go we were still in the game.

“We pushed another man up top and tried to see if we could get it forward, but we made poor decisions and we were punished.”

Noble was keen to build on the positives. He added: “It was maybe just a game too many. We have had a tough run of games with the young boys.

“They have been fantastic for us and this can happen against this squad that has been gathered here (at Buckie).

“We will build on the positives. The boys have given us everything and again I couldn’t fault their workrate.

“We just fell short with decision-making and getting punished in the last 10 minutes was the nail in the coffin for us.

“But we will be respectful and congratulate Buckie on their win.”
