A DERBY goal and win over Inverurie have capped a brilliant start to the Highland League season for Huntly striker Brodie Allen.

Allen (25) scored late in the Black and Golds’ 3-2 victory at Locos on Saturday – a win which saw Huntly collect their 10th point in just their fourth game.

“It’s always tricky when we play Locos but it was a good performance and we were deserved winners in the end,” Allen said.

“There was a wild wind, we were downwind in the first half and had a few chances and a goal ruled off, apparently for handball putting the ball over the line.

“Locos had a few chances and it was a tricky game but we are always buzzing to get our revenge (for the cup defeat) and get the three points and continue our unbeaten league run.”

Allen started the match on the bench, with fellow striker Andy Hunter bagging a brace against his former club to have the visitors 2-0 up on the hour mark.

Locos pulled a goal back with 15 minutes to play, but Allen came off the bench and killed the game with an 86th minute strike. Another Locos goal in added time did nothing to change the destination of the three points, with the Black and Golds making the short journey home along the A96 happy.

Allen added: “Andy (Hunter) loves a goal against his former team and I was buzzing for him to get off the mark and get a double.

“They got one back and it was the 86th minute when I scored mine. Then we conceded a shambles of a goal, it didn’t drop very nicely for us and it made things a bit edgy towards the end.

“Danga (Michael Dangana) did some good work down the left hand side and he’s cut it back to me about ten yards out and I’ve hit it with my left foot and it’s looped over the keeper. It was a bit of a curly toe but I’ll take it. That’s three goals in five now for me.

“There have been previous seasons when I’ve managed to get one or two goals early doors. This is the best start I’ve had for goals and assists so I’ll definitely be looking to keep that going.

“I feel fit and if I can keep my place in the team I don’t think there’s any reason why I can’t go on to have a good season goalscoring wise. Andy has two, Robbie and Danga also have two and I’m top scorer just now and I want to keep it that way.”

Huntly are out of action this weekend due to being knocked out of the Highland League Cup by Inverurie Locos the week before last.

The league, then, is the main focus.

Allen added: “We were delighted to finish top eight last season and we are always looking to improve, so somewhere around the same will be the target.”
