DEFIANT Ellon United manager Tommy Robertson claims his side have been “unlucky” so far this campaign and have enough quality to turn it around following the winter break.

United host Montrose Roselea on Saturday without as much as a single win in their first 10 Superleague games and cut adrift at the foot of the table – with some solace in that they are just four points from safety after East End were deducted points.

However, Robertson said he has seen enough from his team to suggest they can start notching up the points needed to save their season.

He said: “We are creating chances in games but can’t put the ball in the net and of course we need to tighten up at times.

“We’ve had hammerings where the heads go down but we need to believe in ourselves and the wins will come.

“The cup runs have been a different story but we need to take that into the league as we’ve fallen away.

He continued: “It’s been tough at times, we took a doing off Deveronside where we only had two subs who were barely fit.

“Even in the Scottish Cup we had a man sent off early doors.

“But in the last two games before the winter break against Montrose and Nairn we’ve played some really good football.

“It’s just a case of putting the ball in the net and we’ll be trying to bring in one or two guys who have that extra bit about them in front of goal.

“All we need is one or two wins to properly start us and we can go and do that in the new year.

“Some of it maybe stems from last season, when I came in we did seem a bit panicky on the ball at times and there was a naivety with some of them against certain teams in the league.

“It has been frustrating but we need to give ourselves that confidence, there has been a lack of that and it’s needed if we’re to stay up this season.

“That’s our main aim and we need to get into a mentality of going out to win every game.

Ever the optimist, Robertson said the squad need to be united in belief if they are to maintain their top-tier status: “I’m a positive guy and I hope that rubs off on the squad.

“We lost our last two games but I saw the three things I want to see as a manager – togetherness, belief and desire.

“It’s obviously different for the boys too, adapting to a new manager and becoming used to my ideas about football.

“It might take a few years but we will get there, the big thing is to stay in this league and we can build on it.”
