A HUSBAND and wife duo were winners as the fifth round of the Grampian Kart Club Championships took place at the Boyndie Circuit across the weekend of September 9.

Feature trophies were the September Cup, for any class with more than five entries and also the Bambino Trophy.

The prokarts were on Saturday, with dry weather and temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius. Sunday was dry and overcast but still warm.

Prokart (Light)

Matthew Payne led away when the lights went out closely followed by Kat Kazakova. This pair gradually opened a gap over the rest of the field.

Kazakova was keeping Payne under pressure, with the two swapping the lead on laps six and seven.

On the last lap, Kazakova got her bumper ahead and took the chequered flag ahead by 0.5 seconds.

Meantime, Angus Ogilvie and Josh Stewart were having a similar battle for third with many position changes– with Ogilvie coming out on top. Stewart was fourth.

Prokart (Heavy)

In the heavy category, Oleg Kazakova took a lights-to-flag victory. Josh Orr tucked into second with Dave Brown close in third.

Lap eight was decisive, with Brown moving through to take second by two tenths from Orr.

Michael Rose and Roy Wilson were having a robust contest with Rose taking fourth. Scott Bruce gained a three places for fifth with Martin Stephen sixth.

Married couple Oleg and Kat Kazakova won their respective prokart categories in what is believed to be a first.

Husband and wife Olag Kazakova and Kat Kazakova each won both the prokart categories.

Vinnie Lewis and Finlay Smith quickly opened a gap over the rest of the field.

First half of the final the positions remained unaltered. However, in the second half there were five changes of the lead with the final time on the last lap in favour of Smith. Lewis was six hundredths down as they crossed the line.

Andrew Sutherland and Darren Bain had a race-long battle. Bain received a five-second penalty from the Clerk of the Course which dropped him down the order.

Sophie Ingram in a Micro Max class came through from the back to finish fourth on the road. William Alexander was fourth in the class followed by Theo Ingram, Luca Bicocchi, Bruno Simonelli and Bain.

Senior Max 162/177kg

Jonathan Edwards was never headed to take the 162kg class win. Billy Falconer in the 177kg class was running second with the two novices of Andrew Scott Stephen and Greg Simpson in close attendance.

Stephen tried several times but could not get through. Simpson made a small error and dropped back several metres.

Simpson mounted an attack on lap 12 in the infield, clipped a kerb which dislodged the drive chain and coasted into the pits. Stephen came home third.

Junior Max

Pole-man, Alex Hawcutt, led away from the lights closely followed by Aiden Macdonald, Duncan Ingram, JJ Buchan and Kyle Smith.

Ingram grabbed second through the infield on the first lap. Macdonald regained the place at pit corner on lap five.

By this time Hawcutt was away and took the chequered flag by more than four seconds. Smith began to make the move up the order, passing Buchan on lap four and then Duncan at Shirlaws.

Soon Smith had closed down Macdonald and was through on Boyndie straight to finish second on the road. However at post race scrutineering he received a penalty of five seconds for a dropped nose-cone.

This dropped him the sixth in the overall results. Macdonald took second with Ingram third. Leo Massie took fourth from Buchan on the last lap.

All trophies were presented by club chairperson, Dorothy Wyness in the clubhouse.

The last meeting of the year at Boyndie will be Round six of the club championships and the second round of the Northern Challenge on October 7-8.
