IT was honours even in an entertaining top of the table clash on Sunday when Buckie Ladies faced up to their title challengers Orkney.

The two sides, who sit six points apart with Orkney having a game in hand, met at Bught Park, Inverness with all to play for.

An enthralling encounter was to ensue despite the heat but in the end neither side could find the net.

It was a result that left Buckie Ladies' Laura Duncan likely to be the happier of the two managers as her squad retain pole position in the race to retain their title.

She said: "It was an exciting game, both teams went for it.

"We had plenty of chances and so did Orkney – they hit the crossbar and we hit the crossbar twice but we just couldn't put it in the net, we were quite unlucky. I had to change the formation a bit as I had players missing and I knew it was going to be a tough game, especially in the heat.

"Overall I'm happy with the score, it's a far better result for us than it is for them and it keeps our nose in front.

"The game was a great advert for women's football – it wasn't that long ago both Buckie and Orkney were bottom of the league and here we are challenging for the championship."

Next up for Buckie this coming Sunday is a trip to Thurso to play Caithness.

Duncan added: "It's always tough on the road and Caithness have improved a lot.

"However, if we play like we can then we can get the points."

Kick-off is currently scheduled for 2pm – follow Buckie Ladies' Facebook page for match details and updates.
