Good start fails to net points for Turriff

TURRIFF United’s first game in this season’s Highland League ended in a 2-1 away defeat at Formartine.

A late goal from Turriff captain Dave McKenzie was not enough to spur his team on to get anything from the game.

It was Turriff who started ­better, with Gary Harris and Stephen Gauld linking up, and when the cross came over McKenzie ­headed just over.

Formartine’s first foray saw Craig McKeown head Neil McVitie’s corner over the top.

On the quarter-hour mark Lewis Davidson fed Gauld, who aimed at Andy Shearer’s left post, but the ex-Keith stalwart made a good save only for the corner to be wasted.

Davidson was again alert when this time he played in McKenzie’s and his shot was stopped by Shearer.
