Inverurie Locos’ striker Neil Gauld insists that the Garioch side are underdogs as the Highland League title race continues to heat up.

Andy Low’s side currently sit in third place in the league table.

Brora, Fraserburgh, Buckie and Locos are all in the mix for the top silverware.

Ahead of the current season he had called for the Railwaymen to go into the campaign believing they can win the title.

The centre forward is happy with how the season has panned out so far.

He said: “The season has been a little bit up and down.

“We started off not badly and doing fairly well in the league.

“We are probably higher in the league than we expected and have a good team.

“Overall, we have had a decent season so far but the disappointment was the Scottish Cup.

“I think Brora and Fraserburgh are definitely favourites.

"We just need to go about our business quietly and hopefully sneak a few points here and there.

“I think we are definitely underdogs for the title but you never know in football.

“Brora have been hammering everyone recently and it is hard to see them dropping a lot of points.

“To win the league you have to go on a really good run.”

Gauld has been disappointed with his goal scoring exploits but believes that it is better that the team are winning rather than him racking up the goals.

He said: “I’m probably a little bit disappointed considering I think I had nine after a month-and-a-half.

“I haven’t been scoring much lately, although the team has been doing quite well.

“I would have said that I had a good start and haven’t scored a lot recently.

“I know myself once I get the opportunities then I am sure I will get a few more.

“To be honest, as long as we are winning I am not really that worried about my goals.”

The frontman has found the change of management from Neil Cooper to Andy Low easy to adapt to, despite the team undergoing a change of formation.

He said: “With Neil we played two up front and with Andy we play one with three guys behind him, so we have changed formation a little bit.

“The boys seem to be taking to that quite well.

“I get on well with both of them.

“It has been easy enough for me and Andy has played me as well, which is great.”

Locos host struggling Turriff United on Saturday and Gauld is expecting a difficult fixture.

“It will be a tough game as Kris Hunter (Turriff ’s manager) will have them fired up for it,” he added.
