Garioch bowler Jason Banks knocked out world champion Les Gillett at the World Indoor Bowls Championship in their match on Wednesday afternoon, writes Mike Barron.
Banks won the match at Potters Resorts, Hopton on Sea, by two sets to nil with the score 10-5 and 11-8, and now progresses to the quarter-finals.
Banks showed no nerves. The quality of drawing was outstanding. At end four he took three shots to be 7-4 up and he never looked back, consistently drawing to the jack.
In end eight, the penultimate one, it was Gillett in trouble with some poor bowls with Banks having bowls around the jack. The world champion lost the first set 5-10.
In the second set it was end two when Jason scored two shots by striking when Gillett was lying. He scored two against the odds.
It looked like the Scot had used up his fine drawing because end three saw him lose three shots with nothing near the jack.
At the sixth end he again lost three shots. These were his only bad ends.
It was the seventh when he had four superb bowls with none of them further than two feet from the jack.
It was Gillett under pressure with four poor bowls and Banks took four shots.
This turned the game and Garioch's own kept the pressure on and took the win.
The commentator said it was "superb consistent bowling and a deserved victory".
Banks is expected to meet Greenslade of England in the quarter-final later in the week.
