The Scottish Senior Women’s Open Championship will get underway on Tuesday this week, with 102 golfers (some travelling from as far afield as Australia) heading to Aboyne Golf Club to compete for the 2023 title.

The event, which is open to female golfers aged 50 and over, will be held between Tuesday 27 and Friday 30.

The championship event was first introduced in 1997 when Mrs A Wilson was crowned the strokeplay champion at Falkirk Tryst.

Since 2005 there has also been a match play prize, when Mrs P Williamson was crowned both match play and stroke play champion, a feat which has only ever been achieved by three other competitors: Mrs A Bartlett in 2014, Miss M Pow in 2015,and most recently Elaine Moffat (St Regulus Ladies) in 2019.

The format of the event consists of two rounds of strokeplay on the Tuesday and Wednesday, with the top-16 gross scores qualifying for the matchplay stages.

The 16 best nett scores from the rest of the field will also qualify for the handicap matchplay.

The last-16 and quarter finals will be played on Thursday, with the semi-finals and final played on Friday.

The official practice day will take place on Monday, prior to the start of the championship.

For the past two consecutive years, Mortonhall’s Karen Ferguson-Snedden has lifted the trophy (both at Stranraer and Aberdour).

A regular at the top of the Senior Women’s Order of Merit, Ferguson -Snedden will now be seeking a third consecutive win at this year’s championship event.

Ferguson-Snedden’s win in 2021 ended Elaine Moffat’s run of victories in the event who was crowned champion consecutively in 2018 and 2019 and came runner up in 2021 (the event was suspended in 2020 due to the covid pandemic).

Both Moffat and last year’s runner up, Sue Wooster(Australia) , will be competing again this year .

Other notable players in the field this week include Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire), Diane MacDonald (Dumfries & County), Karen Marshall (Baberton), Wendy Nicholson (Baberton) and Sheena Wood (AberdeenLadies), all of whom were part of the Scottish team that brought home the trophy from the Women’s and Men’s Senior Home Internationals last autumn.

Championship host venue Aboyne Golf Club is the oldest golf course in Royal Deeside and is situated southwest of the Loch of Aboyne.
