The gale-force winds and rain have been causing havoc across the north and the weather has hit the sporting programme.

Police Scotland stepped in to advise the postponement of six SPFL matches on Saturday including Elgin City's home game against Forfar Athletic.

"The SPFL has been in discussions with clubs, Police Scotland and relevant authorities on the developing situation and after the red weather warning issued for Tayside, Aberdeenshire and Angus earlier today, it has postponed matches in the interests of safety," said a league statement.

The cinch Premiership games between Aberdeen and Dundee, and St Johnstone and Motherwell were called off.

As well as Elgin's game, Stenhousemuir v Peterhead is off in League 2 along with the Championship game between Arbroath and Raith Rovers, and the League 1 clash between Cove Rangers and Montrose.

In the Highland League, three fixtures were called off on Friday.

League secretary John Campbell said the games were postponed "in light of worsening conditions and weather warnings in certain areas".

Games off are:

Brechin City v Keith

Fraserburgh v Brora Rangers

Formartine United v Wick Academy

He added: "All other matches will be monitored closely with new dates for postponed matches advised in due course."

The entire north junior football programme was cancelled on Friday morning for safety reasons.
