CORNHILL’S newly-crowned Scottish championship tug of war team is flying the saltire on the world stage for the next week at the power sport’s official world championships at Appenzell in Switzerland.

The 12-strong Banffshire village squad stamped its authority on domestic competition this summer by winning three classes at the Scottish championships in Stirling in early July, which qualified them to represent Scotland.

They will fly to the land of the Alps and cuckoo clocks tomorrow (Wednesday) morning to pit their strength, technique and determination against 100 teams from 20 countries in the club event, which runs until next Wednesday, September 12.

Team coach and member David McKenzie said: “We finished sixth overall four years ago – the last time we competed at the world championships – and we’re determined to better that this year if we can.

“There’s a big incentive for us this year because the top six teams qualify for the 2013 World Games, which involve sports pushing for inclusion in the 2016 Olympic Games and beyond.
