The Garioch Indoor Bowling Club are again set to host the 13th Short Mat Championship over the weekend March 18 to 20.

Correspondent Mike Barron said: "Clearance has come from the Scottish Association to host the event because of the changed Covid circumstances.

"Entries are open to all and already Skye and Gretna have registered for the Singles on Friday, the Triples on Saturday and the Pairs on Sunday.

"Entries are invited from all standards.

"Any one interested should contact 01467 622622 any of the competitions.

"It is a first come entry until 24 is reached in Singles and 48 for Pairs and Triples."

He continued: "Comment has been made that with at least 15 internationalists in the entries local players have little chance.

"It should be remembered that of the 12 internationalists from Garioch there were only four in 2018.

"The standard of play has increased dramatically over the years, but winners have in the past come from Fetternear, Insch, Strichen and Tarves."

Says Sandy McDonald, winner of two previous Singles contests and winner of British Isles Fours this winter: “I aim for the hat-trick of wins.

"I am playing, and with everyone else out to beat me I will need to be in my best form.”

Handing over the organiser duties are Harry McIntosh and Bill Conn who have been at the helm since the inception of the tournament in 2015.

Taking on the task is Graeme Allan from Insch, a previous Singles winner.

His win is even more remarkable in that he came off night duty, and a few hours later he won his section, semi final and then final.
