DEVERONVALE assistant manager Craig Park is encouraging the club’s young players to use Saturday’s Scottish Cup first round clash with East Kilbride as a platform to impress.

Vale will be underdogs when they welcome the Lowland League title-chasers to Princess Royal Park, but Park believes they are ready for the occasion.

“We are aware it’s a tough test,” Park said. “They are a strong team and they do well in their own league.

“It’s going to be a very, very tough game but it’s something we are looking forward to.

“We have played the top sides within our own league so that has prepared us. We’ll work hard and do all we can. If we can get to our highest standard we can give them a good game.”

Vale will be up against a former Scottish Cup finalist in Gary Miller – formerly of Ross County – who is one of a number of experienced players in the East Kilbride squad.

Vale might not have anyone of that experience, but Park has encouraged Vale’s youngsters to use the cup clash to prove themselves.

“They’ve got a blend of youth and experience,” he said.

“We have a very, very young squad. It’s a good occasion for boys to go and try to impress.

“We want them to use these games as a platform to show themselves.

“It’s one of oldest competitions in football – if you can’t get motivated for that then I don’t know what you get motivated for.

“Everybody wants to be involved in games like this.”

Vale’s match against Keith on Saturday was postponed as a mark of respect after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

“We gave the boys a rest and had a free weekend,” Park added.

“We’re back to normal now and pretty much have a full strength squad in terms of injuries.”
