KEITH legend Cammy Keith could yet extend his stay at the Kynoch Park club past the end of this season.

The 33-year-old has previously said he will retire at the end of the 2020-21 campaign, mostly owing to family commitments, but said last week that he will make a decision for sure at the end of the shortened season.

He said: “It’s getting tough at the moment with two kids under two, and I’m getting older as well.

“It’s a young side, and I’m the oldest by a country mile.

“But we will see how it goes. We will sit down at the end of the season and discuss it.

“I obviously enjoy playing and scoring, and I still feel I can contribute. Despite being 33. I still feel I’m fit enough, and I’m in good shape after working hard this summer.

“I feel I have still got a part to play, but we will see come the end of the season.”

Keith co-manager Tommy Wilson made it clear that the management team are hopeful their star striker will stay for another campaign, if not more.

Wilson said: “Cammy knows that already (that we want him to stay) before we even discuss things. It has been difficult because we came in and went straight into games.

“We will definitely be trying to get Cammy to stay – that’s for sure – as we will be with the other players we have got here. We will be trying to keep all our best players.

“Cammy is only 33 so he has got plenty years left, and is a long time retired. I’m sure we will be able to keep him playing, hopefully for another three or four seasons – not just the one.”

Keith is so far enjoying playing under Wilson and fellow co-manager Andy Roddie, who took over from Dean Donaldson before the start of this season.

The new management duo are intent on getting the Maroons playing a possession style, and keeping the ball on the deck, a style which Keith thinks could help his game.

He said: “Andy and Tommy are very keen on retaining the ball. They want to play a passing game all the time, which is good to be a part of because it gets you chances.

“As a striker, I’m dying for chances from my team-mates, so it seems to be a style of football that is going to get me that.”

Speaking on his season aims, he added: “I don’t know how many games there are going to be this season, but if I could get anywhere near the 20-goal mark then I’d be delighted. There are a lot of tough games in there.

“League-wise, we need to win as many games as possible against teams around mid-table and below, and if we could get a top-six finish we would be happy with that. We are in the semi-final of a cup, so hopefully we can get a final too.”

It’s another cup tie for Keith this weekend, as they welcome Fife side Hill of Beath Hawthorn to Kynoch Park in the first round of the Scottish Cup. The Maroons beat Fort William 5-1 in the second preliminary qualifying round, with Cammy Keith bagging a brace as Keith won a home Scottish Cup tie for the first time since January 1996.

The game also saw Cammy Keith become the club’s all-time top scorer in the Scottish Cup, with nine strikes.

Hill of Beath, who play in the East of Scotland League, defeated Whitehill Welfare, of the same league, 2-1 to reach this stage of the competition.
