BUCKIE Thistle were left to rue a string of missed chances in a blistering start to their Scottish Cup second round match against Opengoal Broomhill who won 3-1 at Victoria Park.

Buckie Thistle captain Sam Pugh was shown a red card after just 25 minutes.

The Jags had three golden chances to score as they took the game to the Lowland League side in the opening 10 minutes.

However, a combination of great goalkeeping, good defending and poor finishing meant Buckie failed to breach the Broomhill rearguard.

Broomhill keeper David Wilson made an outstanding save from point blank range to deny Andy MacAskill and then Josh Peters had a header cleared off the line by James Grant.

Sam Urquhart then failed to get a header on target from close range, before Peters fired a shot straight at Wilson after Broomhill were caught trying to play out from the back.

The visitors took the lead in the 11th minute when the impressive Broque Watson fired them ahead after a quick counter attack.

And the game swing in Broomhill's favour when Buckie skipper Sam Pugh was shown a red card for two yellow cards inside the opening 25 minutes.

Sub Evan Maley made it 2-0 with a cool finish in the 73rd minute.

Buckie did rally and scored a good goal from Marcus Goodall in the 75th minute, but any hopes of a fightback were dashed within a minute when Jamie Semple made it 3-1.

Buckie boss Graeme Stewart admitted his side should have hit the net a number of times in that opening 10 minutes.

He said: "On another day if we had kept 11 on the park we could have won comfortably.

"I am disappointed with some of the goals but in terms of effort, commitment and shape, I thought we were outstanding.

"It was a ridiculous decision for Sam who shouldn't be diving in. The second one was a booking but I don't think the first one was.

"Sam is 26 now and captain, and he has got to learn from that. He is a great kid and a leader in the team.

"Going down to 10 men hurt us and we were chasing the game."

Opengoal Broomhill boss Si Ferry said: "It was a great cup tie and I absolutely loved it. It was a proper Scottish Cup tie.

"I have got a lot of respect for Buckie who are a really good team and don't lose a lot of games here, so to come up here and get through was great.

"I thought we grew into the game and then the sending off changed the game. The pitch was tough in terms of how we wanted to play and Buckie press so well."
