BUCKIE Thistle manager Graeme Stewart says Saturday’s comfortable 3-0 win against Huntly was his side’s “best performance of the season” so far.

Huntly were unbeaten going into the game at Victoria Park but goals from Scott Adams and Max Barry before half time and another after the interval from Darryl McHardy ensured the Jags claimed a thoroughly deserved three points.

Stewart was full of praise for his side, adding that he was especially pleased with the control they had in the game.

“It was probably our best performance of the season so far,” Stewart said.

“We controlled the game and created quite a few chances so we’re really thrilled with it and we kept a clean sheet as well so overall I think it was a great performance.

“I think the first 15 minutes was fairly even. After that I think we’ve really controlled the game especially in the second half with the amount of possession we had.

“Huntly have started the season really well. They’re a good team but I think we showed our quality in the end and we thoroughly deserved the win.”

Max Barry grabbed the crucial second on Saturday and Stewart was keen to single the former Aberdeen man out for his performance.

“I thought Max was the best player on the pitch,” Stewart said. “I really don’t think anyone was below a seven or eight out of 10 though so we’re thrilled with the overall performance.”

The Jags will now turn their attention towards Highland League Cup action with a quarter-final tie away to Keith on Saturday.

“We need to go and win some trophies now,” Stewart added.

“It’s not going to be easy but we’ll go there full of confidence trying to make the semi-final.”

Huntly assistant manager Stefan Laird said his side paid the price for missing early opportunities after the Black and Golds started brightly on Saturday.

"It's frustrating that we didn't take advantage of the chances that we created," Laird said.

"We created a number of chances and on another day we could have taken them but for us the bigger issue in the game is that we shouldn't have allowed ourselves to drop off after that first goal.

"We were still in the game but in the second half Buckie were in total control.

"As dominant as Buckie were in the second half I thought our defending at times was really uncharacteristic. We made a couple of really bad errors. Buckie took advantage and that's why they're one of the top teams on the league."

Huntly will look to bounce back at home to Turriff United on Saturday.
