AN UNDER-strength Inverurie Locos side battled courageously to record an unlikely 1-0 victory at Princess Royal Park on Saturday, with Stuart McKay netting right at the death to earn the plaudits.

For Charlie Charlesworth’s Deveronvale team it was same again but on a different week as they created and passed up chance after chance, missing a second penalty in as many weeks only to end up with nothing as they saw their title challenge slip away before the business end of the season has really started.

It all seemed to be going to plan with the Banffers starting the match in full flow with a slick move involving sponsor’s man of the match Colin Charlesworth and Chris Blackhall seeing the latter get to the back-line, but his pass fell just behind the waiting Kris Duncan.

Locos, however, nearly netted at the other end in their first attack, with Neil McLean leading the charge against a thin-looking ’Vale defence, but when the ball was slipped to Craig Ross the winger smashed it high and wide.
