The coronavirus outbreak means sports clubs, youth centres and after school groups are closed indefinitely with many young people across the region facing a new reality of being at home full time.

Aldi recognises that many clubs across the north-east of Scotland could still be facing running costs, fees and salary outgoings as they try to navigate through these challenging times.

As a result, Aldi has extended the deadline for applications until Friday, May 22 to give more clubs across the region the chance to apply for essential funding to support them through this difficult period.

Aldi’s Scottish Sport Fund is an initiative that aims to help people of all ages take part in physical activity within their local communities by giving clubs the chance to secure much needed funding. Since launching in 2016, over 394 clubs across Scotland have benefitted from a funding boost of more than £190,000, helping to improve community access to sports across the country.

This year, Aldi has restructured the prizes to improve investment in grassroots sport, giving local sports clubs the chance to receive funding ranging from £500 to £2500.

In 2019, the Aldi Scottish Sport Fund supported several clubs across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire including Banchory Trampoline Club, Granite City Guerillas, Colony Football and Grampian Cardiac Rehabilitation Association.

This year, the supermarket aims to help sporting organisations in the region secure funding to put towards a range of purposes, including new strips and equipment or to put towards the cost of training facilities and coaching.

Regional Managing Director for Aldi Scotland, Richard Holloway, said: “We recognise that sports clubs and organisations across the north east will be severely impacted by the Coronavirus outbreak, and experiencing a very difficult time.

"To give more people the opportunity to apply for essential funding, we have extended the deadline for applications to Aldi’s Scottish Sports Fund until Friday, May 22.

“Our mission is to make it easier for people to access sport opportunities within their local communities, and with the Aldi Scottish Sport Fund, we hope to give local clubs a helping hand to continue their fantastic work, and encourage people across Scotland to lead a healthy, active lifestyle and with prizes range from £500 to £2500, I’d encourage any sports club across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire to apply.”

One applicant will be selected to receive £2500 of funding, two applicants will each receive £1000 of funding, while several other applicants will each receive £500 of funding towards their sports club.

Applications will be selected at random to receive each of the funding brackets.

Applications can be made via www.aldi.co.uk/scottishsportfund.
